The New York Giants have been competitors for some time now, more or less since Eli Manning came to town. They've picked up a couple surprise Super Bowl rings and have essentially been the epitome of the statement "anything can happen in the playoffs," making it in with so-so records on more than one occasion.
But they fell short in 2012, as the Washington Redskins surged past them to take the division under rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III. The Giants aren't likely to make the playoffs with a 9-7 record anymore, so they'll need to step things up in 2013. They've made it clear they want a strong defensive front, so that could be an option in the 2013 NFL Draft.
Don Banks of SI.com released his latest mock draft on Wednesday and feels the same way, having the Giants take defensive end Bjoern Werner out of Florida State.
The Giants always collect quality pass rushers, and if Werner lasts this long, New York could easily pounce. But I'll give you one interesting twist to watch out for as well: New York is playing it coy, but it may well like the other Florida State defensive end, Tank Carradine, a little bit better.
It's about time that Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora wrap up their time with the Giants, and the best thing the team could do is find their true replacements in the draft. Werner was talked about as a potential top-10 pick earlier in the offseason, so he should be good value at No. 19.
To compare, Dan Kadar of SB Nation released his latest mock draft on Monday and has the Giants taking Tank Carradine out of Florida State. Carradine is aslo noted in Banks' mock draft, so it's basically a toss-up at this point.
