The New York Jets are launching another rebuilding period, though they don't yet have a quarterback to lead it. Mark Sanchez has not worked out, though the starting job is probably his to lose heading into next season, provided he can fend off veteran David Garrard.
Many have speculated as to whether or not the Jets would pull the trigger on a quarterback early in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Unfortunately, it's a rather weak quarterback class, and doing that might not be the smartest choice.
Don Banks of SI.com released his latest mock draft on Wednesday and he has the Jets passing up on a quarterback to take LSU outside linebacker/defensive end Barkevious Mingo with the No. 9 overall pick:
The Jets defense gets the opening dose of first-round attention, with a pass rusher in Mingo who can interject Rex Ryan's 3-4 formation with play-making ability and pressure from the edge.
Banks throws a surprise in with this mock, though. He's so convinced that the Jets will deal cornerback Darrelle Revis to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for a first-round pick, that he's gone ahead and given the Jets the No. 13 overall pick in his mock, as well. He has them taking quarterback Geno Smith out of West Virginia with that pick.
The latest mock draft from SB Nation's Matthew Fairburn has the Jets taking Mingo as well at No. 9, for what it's worth. You can find a scouting report on Mingo here.
