The New York Mets got off to a slow start in their series at home against the Atlanta Braves, dropping the first game, 3-0.
Braves starter Paul Maholm was one of six pitchers to limit the Mets to only five hits on the night. Maholm gave up all five hits but picked up his 12th win of the season as he went 5 1/3 innings striking out six batters along the way. Closer Craig Kimbrel came on in the ninth to earn his 35th save of the year. The Braves' Dan Uggla and Jason Heyward chipped in offensively with solo home runs.
The Mets' Jonathan Niese had a fine start, going six innings and giving up only one run. But he picked up his ninth loss due to a lack of run support and is now 10-9 on the season.
Another down spot for the Mets was the loss of center fielder Andres Torres. He left the game in the top of the second inning with a knee bruise and his status for the rest of the series isn't yet known.
