The New York Yankees and New York Mets are in action Friday night, with the Mets playing out the string and the Yankees playing in a series with major playoff implications.
The Yankees host the Tampa Bay Rays and are still tied with the Baltimore Orioles for first place in the AL East. The Rays didn't do New York any help this past week, losing all three games in a set to Baltimore including a pair of walkoff losses, leaving the division lead tied. The game also represents a matchup against a team still in the hunt for the Wild Card should the Yanks lose the division, as the Rays are four games back of the final playoff spot. New York can cement their chances of at least playing a one-game playoff by handling the Rays this series. The matchup gets off to a good start, as aces C.C. Sabathia and David Price take the mound.
The Mets play a team in play for the NL Wild Card, the Milwaukee Brewers. They head to Wisconsin to face a team 3.5 games back of the final playoff spot and therefore in need of every game with only a few weeks left in the season. John Niese takes the mound for the Mets, while Mike Fiers, who starts for the Brewers, has posted just a 3.05 ERA thus far.
