The Rutgers Scarlet Knights football program, led by first-year head coach Kyle Flood, officially took the field for the first time Monday, as preseason camp entered day one. Players went through their usual preseason drills in shorts and t-shirts, while Flood tried to get a sense of where everybody was at.
"The clock is ticking towards the first game," said Flood. "In training camp, the intensity level of everybody in the organization, whether its the players, the support staff, everybody, rises a little bit. Now, it's tangible because that first a game is coming quick."
A couple of notes from Flood's press conference:
- A final decision on the starting quarterback competition, which features junior Chas Dodd and sophomore Gary Nova, will not be made until about 7-10 days before the Scarlet Knights' first game.
- Flood said the biggest thing he's looking for this early on is "clean football." Flood says he tries to move around to all the positions to get a glimpse of the players.
- As for the running back competition, which features sophomore Savon Huggins, a highly-touted blue-chipper out of high school, vs. junior Jawan Jamison, Flood said carries will be determined after the preseason battle and throughout the season.
