The U.S. Women's National Soccer team defeated Canada, 4-3, in extra time in the semifinals on Monday at the 2012 London Olympics. The match was tied 3-3 after regulation.
Rochester, N.Y., native Abby Wambach helped send the match to extra time by converting on a penalty kick goal in the 80th minute. Wambach hit the crossbar with a header in the 119th minute in the second extra time period, which would have surely won the match if she had scored. However, the U.S. would still get a win without having to go to penalty kicks. Alex Morgan scored in stoppage time of the second extra time to win it for the U.S. with a header in the penalty area (122nd minute). New Jersey native Heather O'Reilly sent the cross into the area for Morgan.
In regulation, Christine Sinclair netted a hat trick against the U.S. for the Canadians with goals in the 22nd, 67th and 73rd minutes of the match. The U.S. got goals from Megan Rapinoe (54th and 70th minutes) and Wambach on the penalty kick.
The U.S. will now play Japan for the Gold Medal on Aug. 9. Canada will play France in the Bronze Medal match on Aug. 9.
