For the first time in 60 years Monday, Great Britain won a gold medal in the equestrian team jumping competition. The host nation of the 2012 Olympic games earned its first medal in the event since 1984 by winning a jump-off against the Netherlands, who earned the silver medal. Saudi Arabia earned the bronze.
A jump-off is essentially an overtime, which featured those two teams riding once more. The Brits earned the victory after the Netherlands basically blew up in the jump-off and allowed Great Britain to clinch the gold after having just three of its four riders participate in the jump-off.
Team USA, which features Mt. Kisco, N.Y., native McLain Ward, finished in a sixth-place tie with Sweden. Switzerland and Canada finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
