The New York Mets breezed to a 3-0 win over the Marlins on Friday night, opening the series in Miami with a game that lasted just over two hours. R.A. Dickey went the distance for the Mets, giving up just five hits for the shutout victory. He struck out seven on his way to a league-leading 17th win of the season. Dickey had the knuckleball dancing to perfection, mixing up the Fish and notching his fifth complete game and third shutout of this miraculous season.
Nate Eovaldi wasn't exactly a gas can on the other side for the Marlins, but he could not match Dickey. The Mets scored three runs on just four hits against Eovaldi, but it would be more than enough. Ike Davis was responsible for knocking in all three runs. The first came on a sac fly that scored Ruben Tejada. Davis would then get his first hit of the night in the seventh, and this one would leave the yard. The two-run homer pushed the lead to 3-0, where it would remain as Dickey sealed up the final three innings.
Jeremy Hefner will take the ball for New York on Saturday and try to clinch the series against Josh Johnson.
