Team USA held on to their lead in the 2012 London Games medal count, adding six medals, three of them gold. The latest medal count leaves them with a total of 43 medals, one more than China, their nearest competitor. China added eight medals on Friday for a total of 42.

New York native Cullen Jones helped the US hold on to their lead, picking up a silver medal in the men's 50-meter freestyle swimming event. The other contributors to Team USA's medal total were:
- Michael Phelps, gold, men's 100m butterfly
- Missy Franklin, gold, women's 200m backstroke
- Elizabeth Beisel, bronze, women's 200m backstroke
- Katie Ledecky, gold, women's 800m freestyle
- Reese Hoffa, bronze, men's shotput
Swimming continued to be Team USA's most successful sport, adding five of Friday's six medals and being responsible for 28 of the 43 total. In non-medal action, the US women's soccer team advanced with a 2-0 victory over New Zealand, including a goal by Rochester native Abby Wambach, and the USA women's basketball team beat the Czech Republic 88-61.
