Favorites advanced all over the men's and women's draws on the second day of the U.S. Open from Flushing Meadow, but Caroline Wozniacki's surprising loss to unseeded Irina-Camelia Begu, 6-2, 6-2 as the day drew proved the most noteworthy result of the tournament thus far.
Wozniacki's straight-set loss opens up her quarter of the draw for Serena Williams, who cruised by Coco Vandeweghe, 6-1, 6-1. Serena's sister Venus had a similarly easy time in her first round match, topping Bethanie Mattek-Sands, 6-3, 6-1.
On the men's side of the draw, favorites Novak Djokovic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga were in action on the tournament's second day, and both had an easy time of advancing to the second round of the year's final major, as Djokovic topped Paolo Lorenzi, 6-1, 6-0, 6-1 and Tsonga defeated Karol Beck 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2).
American Andy Roddick also advanced, using his serve to best qualifier Rhyne Williams, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.
