2012 U.S. Open: Caroline Wozniacki Stunned In Opening Round

Flushing Meadow has its first real upset of the tournament, as No. 8 Caroline Wozniacki, a former world No. 1 who was looking for her first major title, has been ousted in the first round by unseeded Irina-Camelia Begu, 6-2, 6-2.

Begu dominated Wozniacki, creating 19 winners to Wozniacki's four, while committing 19 errors to Wozniacki's 22 errors at Louis Armstrong Stadium from Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Begu will now square off against Silvia Soler-Espinosa in the second round after the Spaniard defeated Russia's Alla Kudryavtseva, 6-3, 6-2 in her first round match.

Neither Begu nor Soler-Espinosa have advanced past the third round of the U.S. Open in their careers, and now the winner of their second-round match will be able to do just that.

Wozniacki's loss opens up the quarter that featured her and Serena Williams a bit, though Williams will be expected to make the semifinals out of the region of the draw.
