U.S. Open Tennis Scores: Sloane Stephens Scores Upset

19-year-old American Sloane Stephens upset No. 22-seed Italian Francesca Schiavone, 6-3, 6-4, at the U.S. Open on Tuesday. Stephens outplayed Schiavone in nearly all aspects of the match, notching 15 winners to 10 for the Italian and committing 13 fewer unforced errors. Stephens reached the third round of the 2011 U.S. Open and has been steadily improving over the past year, including an impressive run to the fourth round in the French Open this year. Stephens could establish herself as the future of American women's tennis with a strong showing in New York this year.

Elsewhere in the women's bracket, No. 10-seed Italian Sara Errani topped Spain's Garbine Muguruza, 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-1, and 13th-seed Dominika Cibulkova beat Sweden's Johanna Larsson, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-0.

On the men's side, No. 18-seed Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland defeated Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky, 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, 6-2.
