American Sam Querrey won his first-round match at the 2012 U.S. Open on Tuesday, defeating Yen-Hsun Lu of Taiwan in four sets, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5.
Neither man had great accuracy on his first serve, with the 27th-seeded Querrey landing 53 percent of his first service opportunities and Lu just 50 percent. Querrey was more successful on his second serve, though, winning 60 percent of his points to Lu's 46 percent.
The American will now advance to face Spain's Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo in the second round. Querrey, who missed the 2011 U.S. Open due to elbow surgery, made it to the fourth round in the 2010 tournament, which was his best showing at Flushing Meadows.
Also on the men's side, Germany's Philipp Petzchner completed an impressive comeback from a two-set hole to beat France's Nicolas Mahut in five sets, 1-6, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).
In the women's draw on Tuesday afternoon, No. 20 Roberta Vinci of Italy and No. 30 Jelena Jankovic of Serbia both won in straight sets. In a slight upset, Ayumi Morita of Japan topped 26th-seeded Romanian Monica Niculescu.
