New York Giants Chris Canty: PUP List Not Where He Wants To Be

One of the moves the New York Giants made Monday to reach the 75-man roster limit was to place veteran defensive tackle Chris Canty on the Physically Unable To Perform (PUP) list. Canty does not sound happy about the decision.

"It doesn’t matter how I feel about it. I was brought here to do a job and right now, they don’t feel that I could do that job. They don’t feel that it’s in the best interest of the football team for me to be playing and so that’s what it is," Canty said Monday.

Canty, entering his eighth season, had offseason knee surgery and expected to be ready some time during the preseason. It sound like Canty wants to play, but is being held back by the medical staff.

"I feel good. I feel in pretty good shape considering all the factors. I stand by the position my knee is better than it was in November, December, January of last season, but ultimately this was a decision that was made in the best interest of the football team," Canty said. "I feel like I’m close. Obviously saying that my knee is in better physical condition. Not just the way it feels, but anatomically it’s better than what it was. But at the end of the day, the coaches and medical staff feel it’s in the best interest of the team for me to be on PUP right now. So that’s what we’re doing."

Canty will be eligible to come off the PUP list after Week 6 of the regular season. Until then he cannot practice with the team.
