Watney had trailed Padraig Harrington by one stroke entering the day, but the Irish golfer has fallen apart in his second round, shooting 4-over through six holes to drop to 3-under.
Tiger Woods was four strokes back of the leader when the day began, but he is 1-over through four holes on Friday, leaving him six strokes behind Watney.
The projected cut is at even-par and among those golfers finished on Friday that are likely already headed homed include Jim Furyk (2-over), Davis Love III (6-over) and Boo Weekley (12-over).
