The Rutgers Scarlet Knights held their final scrimmage Thursday before the regular season kicks off on Sept. 1 against Tulane. Gary Nova took a back seat on the day, attempting just six passes and letting Jawan Jamison and Savon Huggins control the offense on the ground. The two running backs combined for 127 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries.
The big day rushing, albeit against the second-team defense, was a marked improvement from the previous scrimmage when the Jamison and Huggins combined for just 50 yards on 22 carries. Rutgers is looking to improve a ground game that finished 115th out of 120 schools last season. Jamison was pleased with the performance Thursday.
"I don't think it matters (how)," Jamison said. "I think it's all about the confidence. It was very big, just to establish (the running game) and get more confidence."
He added, "definitely we needed a little pump up."
With Nova entrenched as the starter at quarterback, the Scarlet Knights are hoping to take major steps forward from an offense that struggled at times last season. By all accounts, they are well on their way.
