The Rangers came into Yankee Stadium having scored the most runs in the MLB, but strong starting pitching from the Yankees has tamed Texas' bats, meaning they might not leave the Bronx with the distinction of being the league's most powerful offense.
What the Yankees' staff has been able to do against Texas has been impressive. David Phelps gave up two runs in his first two innings Monday before he and Derek Lowe combined for seven scoreless. Hiroki Kuroda pitched a two-hit shutout Tuesday. And although Josh Hamilton took Freddy Garcia deep twice, those were the only two runs Texas could muster, as the Rangers fell 3-2. Texas still leads the majors with 582 runs scored, but the Yankees are a close second at 580. If Ivan Nova can continue the work his rotation mates have started New York might pass the Rangers in that category. Oh, and they also might pull off a four-game sweep against the team with the second-best record in the American League.
Nova had one of his best outings of the year, a 7.1 inning, 10-strikeout performance against Toronto where he only allowed two runs. He'll face off against Derek Holland, who the Yankees lit up for seven runs in six innings back in April.
Although the Yankees' bats haven't been blistering hot, they haven't needed much run support in the past three games. They'll hope to perform better against Holland on getaway day.
