Fresh off his return from the DL, starting pitcher Johan Santana looked nothing like the former Cy Young winner who threw a no hitter on June 1. Santana allowed eight runs in one and a third innings and the New York Mets were unable to recover from an early deficit, falling to the Atlanta Braves on Saturday night by a final score of 9-3.
The Braves did most of their damage against Santana in the second inning, batting in seven runs. Starting pitcher Kris Medlen got the ball rolling with an RBI single, which was later followed up with RBIs from outfielders Michael Bourn and Jason Heyward, third baseman Chipper Jones and first baseman Freddie Freeman.
The Mets put a run on the board in the bottom of the second courtesy of a single by center fielder Andres Torres that scored first baseman Ike Davis, but it hardly put a dent in Atlanta's large lead. New York was unable to muster any additional runs until the eighth inning, scoring twice and closing the gap to 9-3. But it was too little too late for the Mets, who dropped their second straight to the Braves in their series.
New York and Atlanta will face off again on Sunday at 8 p.m. Eastern Time.
