New Jersey native Rebecca Soni set a world record in the semifinals of the women's 200-meter breaststroke on Wednesday at the 2012 London Olympics.
Soni is the defending Olympic champion in the event. She won her heat with a time of 2:20.0 and won by more than two seconds over Japan's Satomi Suzuki. The previous world record in the event was 2:20.12 by Canada's Annamay Pierse (set in 2009 at the World Championships in Rome). Soni will compete for the gold in the 200-meter breaststroke on Thursday night.
Soni already has a silver medal in the London Olympics in the women's 100-meter breaststroke. She won silver in that event in Beijing in 2008 as well. Soni's other event remaining in the Olympics is the 4x100 medley relay.
