The 2012 Summer Olympics in London will be held in London from July 27-August 12. As you might expect, many members of Team USA have connections to the New York region. To begin our regional coverage of the London Olympics, let's look at some of the notable athletes representing the region.
The most recognizable New York athletes in the Games are probably the three NBA players, Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chander of the New York Knicks and Deron Williams of the Brooklyn Nets. Team USA begins play in men's basketball on July 28 against France.
Abby Wambach, from Rochester, NY, will be part of the women's soccer team. Wambach is the second-leading scorer in U.S. women's soccer history behind Mia Hamm. Play in women's soccer actually begins on Wednesday, July 25, two days prior to the Opening Ceremonies. The U.S. plays its opening match that day against France.
Christina McHale, a professional tennis player from Teaneck, N.J., will participate in the women's singles event.
