Webb Simpson thought his ball might have been resting on top of a sprinkler head in the rough next to the 18th green on Sunday at the Olympic Club, so he asked for a ruling on whether he could receive a free drop.
It was the final round of the 2012 U.S. Open, and Simpson was tied for the lead. He didn't know, but Jim Furyk was in the process of bogeying the 16th hole, leaving a window for Simpson to seize the advantage if he could get up and down from the rough.
Simpson was told he could not get a drop. Instead, he chipped to within three feet and sunk the putt to remain 1-over par. When Furyk and Graeme McDowell both failed to birdie the 18th, Simpson became the U.S. Open champion.
