It is tempting to compare Stony Brook’s stunning advance to the College World Series to Butler’s heroics in the N.C.A.A. tournament, or Virginia Commonwealth’s or George Mason’s or any other mid-major team that crashed the bluebloods’ party and got everyone excited about a school hardly anyone knew had a basketball team.

But that doesn’t come close to doing justice to what Stony Brook accomplished over the weekend.
