New Jersey native Christina McHale defeated Kiki Bertens in Round 1 at the 2012 French Open on Monday to advance.
McHale won on Court 3, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. With the win, McHale kept American women a perfect 10 for 10 in the first round at the French Open. McHale did not advance out of the first round in her 2010 and 2011 French Open appearances.
About the way the Americans played, McHale said
"We're all pushing each other at the same time," said McHale, a 20-year-old from Englewood Cliffs, N.J. "It's like a healthy competitiveness, I think." (via SI)
McHale will meet American Lauren Davis in Round 2. Davis, a qualifier, defeated the No. 30 seed Mona Barthel in Round 1.
