2012 MAAC Baseball Tournament: Canisius, Manhattan College Win, Canisius Advances To Championship Round

Friday's action in the MAAC Championship Tournament saw the Manhattan College Jaspers defeat the Fairfield University Stags, 1-0, and the Canisius College Griffs beat the Rider College Broncs, 10-3. Canisius will advance to the championship round, facing the winner of the Manhattan vs. Rider elimination game.

In the first game of the day Manhattan College senior Taylor Sewitt drove his team to victory with a complete game shutout, giving up just four hits and one walk while striking out 12 in nine innings.

Fairfield's Brett Shulick struggled in the first, throwing 38 pitches and giving up a run on an RBI walk. Shulick settled down after that, not giving up another run in seven additional innings, but the single run was all Manhattan College needed for the victory.

The second game of the day saw Canisius beat Rider by a score of 10-3, with MAAC Rookie of the Year Devon Steward pitching eight innings for Canisius. He gave up three runs on three hits, striking out two and walking four. Rohn Pierce pitched a single scoreless inning of relief. Canisius got a big contribution from the bottom half of their lineup, with batters five through eight combining to go 7-15 with four RBI. The win moves Canisius on to the championship round, their first appearance in program history.

The elimination game is scheduled for 2:00pm Saturday, with the winner playing Canisius at 6 p.m.
