The 2012 Atlantic 10 Baseball Tournament featured plenty of drama on Thursday, starting with the early game between the top-seeded St. Louis Billikens and the No. 5 Richmond Spiders. Intermittent downpours in New York City delayed the schedule noon start of the game to 3:56 p.m. ET at Houlihan Park. The Spiders came out fired up anyway, upsetting the Billikens, 6-0, on the afternoon. Zak Sterling pitched complete game shutout, allowing just four hits and striking out five.
The start time for the game between No. 2 Dayton Flyers and the No. 6 St. Joseph's Hawks was pushed back to 7:00 p.m. due to the earlier game finishing late. More rain pushed the start even further, all the way to approximately 9:40 p.m. After midnight there still wasn't a winner until Josh Jeffery finally ended the game in the 13th inning with a single down center to score Robby Sunderman and give the Flyers a 4-3 win. The Hawks led 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth, but reliever Steven Schuler gave up the game-tying run to send the game to extra innings.
Due to weather issues, the scheduled evening game between No. 3 Rhode Island and the lower-seeded loser of Thursday's earlier games (in this case, St. Joseph's) will be pushed back to Friday.
