The 2012 MAAC Baseball Tournament began Thursday with an upset. The No. 4 seed Rider University defeated top-seeded Manhattan College, 6-4, to advance to the winner's bracket on Friday. Broncos' starter Tyler Smith went the distance to earn the win, giving up just four earned runs on six hits and three walks. He struck out four.
No. 2 Canisius College defeated No. 3 Fairfield University, 2-1, to move on to face Rider on Friday. Both starters pitched gems. Canisius' Garrett Cortright went 8 1/3 innings giving up just one earned run on five hits and two walks while striking out six. Second baseman Jose Torralba won the game on a single in the bottom ninth to bring Christian Segar home.
Canisius is scheduled to face Rider at 7:00 p.m. ET on Friday. Manhattan will face Fairfield in the losers bracket at 3:00 p.m.
