Rising middleweight prospect Chris Weidman (Wantagh, NY) and top wrestling standout Mark Munoz are headlining UFC on FUEL TV 4 Wednesday July 11 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose. Tickets were released to UFC Fight Club presale members and will be available to the general public this week.
Weidman (8-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) comes off a victory over Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Demian Maia at UFC on FOX 2 after taking the fight on 10 days’ notice thanks to an injury that forced Munoz from his showdown with Chael Sonnen. Despite having to drop 32 pounds in those 10 days, Weidman still grinded out a decision victory for his fourth UFC win in 11 months.
“It was so easy to make excuses on why it’s OK to lose this fight,” Weidman told me for TapouT magazine, “but I refused to do it. It was the hardest thing I did in my life. I will never do that again.”
This time, Weidman has a full camp with Matt Serra and Ray Longo, and a win on July 11 will rocket him into top contender status. Munoz, however, is on a four-fight winning streak and 7-1 in his last eight fights. If he ends Weidman’s undefeated run, he could be in line for a shot at the winner of Sonnen’s challenge to middleweight champion Anderson Silva at UFC 148 July 7.
