The New York Yankees (4-2) and New York Mets (2-3) had very different weeks, but both had standout performances. For the Bronx Bombers, embarrassing the Boston Red Sox during the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Fenway Park was the highlight, with an assist from their fashion choice.
The Amazins dropped two out of three to the Atlanta Braves followed by a heartbreaker in 10 innings to the San Francisco Giants, but bounced back nicely with a hard fought walk-off win on Saturday.
Here are the 10 best performances from the Yankees and Mets over the past week.
1. Nick Swisher, Yankees -- You may not always like his antics, but Swisher had six RBI Saturday in the 15-9 comeback victory over the Boston Red Sox. His 20 RBI is tops in the AL and 11 of those have come in the past week. -- Ed Valentine
2. Derek Jeter, Yankees -- The captain continues to rake. He is at .382 with four home runs already after hitting only six last season. Jeter hit .407 (11-for-27) last week. -- EV
3. Mike Pelfrey, Mets -- Who is this man and what has he done with Mike Pelfrey? The maddening righty has yet to pick up a decision this season but very well could be 3-0. Pelfrey was fantastic over eight innings Saturday, surrendering just one run in a performance that most times last season would have certainly ended for him in the fifth after wearing down.
4. Curtis Granderson, Yankees -- The Grandy Man had a 5-for-5, three-home run night and hit .400 with four long balls for the week. -- EV
5.Scott Hairston, Mets -- The utility man didn't have one hit all week, but New York can thank him for their win on Saturday. Just when the Mets were about to blow a one-out, bases-loaded situation in the 9th inning when the veteran came to the rescue. Kirk Nieuwenhuis had just rolled what would be an inning-ending double play to first with the throw coming home to force out Hairston, but on his slide into home, he clipped Giants catcher Buster Posey enough to cause a throwing error that brought in the winning run.
6. Yankees Throwback Uniforms -- The Yankees wore throwbacks Friday for the first time in their history, donning 1912 uniforms to mark the 100th anniversary of Boston's Fenway Park. The number-less jerseys were awesome. -- EV
7. David Wright, Mets -- Don't freak out, but his OPS has dropped to 1.120, the lowest of the season. He also had his first hitless game of the year Saturday. Other than that, all he did was hit .300 for the week.
8. Alex Rodriguez, Yankees -- Historic week for A-Rod, hitting the 631st home run of his career to move past Ken Griffey, Jr. and into fifth place all-time. -- EV
9.David Robertson, Yankees -- The reliever continued his outstanding work this week. Robertson now has eight appearances covering eight innings and has yet to be scored upon. -- EV
10. Jason Bay, Mets -- For what seems like the first time as a Met, Bay had two home runs this week and hit safely in every game, pushing his hitting streak to seven games. He still has a long way to go if the fans are going to stop booing every time he makes an out, but at least things seem pointed in the right direction.
