After earning the No. 1 seed in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, the Syracuse Orange men's basketball program will be playing No. 16-seeded UNC-Asheville Bulldogs in the round of 64 at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, PA. on Thursday. The Orange received an at-large bid from the tournament's selection committee after turning in a 31-1 record during the regular season.
Despite their regular-season success, the Orange lost in the semifinals of the Big East Conference Tournament to the Cincinnati Bearcats on Friday. The loss didn't effect Syracuse's seed in the NCAA Tournament, as the selection committee gave them the No. 2-overall seed and placed them in the favorable East region of the bracket. Syracuse could play two games in Pittsburgh and its Sweet 16 and Elite 8 contests in Boston, MA.
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs finished their regular season 24-9 and earn an automatic invite to the NCAA Touranament by winning the Big South Conference Tournament title. The 24 wins set a new school record, while this will be the second straight season the Bulldogs won the Big South Tournament crown.
Last year, UNC-Asheville lost to the Pittsburgh Panthers, another Big East program, 71-47. Overall, this will be the fourth all-time meeting between these two programs, as the Orange are undefeated against the Bulldogs.
Statistically, UNC-Ashville is paced by Matt Dickey who averaged 13.4 points per game during the season, J.P. Primm isn't far behind with12.7 ppg.
