Trenton, New Jersey native Martin Truex Jr., who will be representing Michael Waltrip Racing in the Napa Auto Parts No. 56 Toyota Camry in the Feb. 26 Daytona 500, is looking to win his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race since 2007, and if he does, it would only be the second of his career.
Truex, in a recent interview, said that the Daytona 500 is NASCAR's Super Bowl and that he'd go crazy if he won.
"I would just want to take the trophy home. I don't care about the rest. I'd put it where I sit all the time and see it the most. It would be a huge deal, obviously. It's the Daytona 500, it's our Super Bowl -- the race we all want to win. Since we're here now, this is the first thing on our minds, is trying to win here. It would be great. I don't even know what I'd do. I'd probably go crazy."
The Daytona 500 is the first, and biggest, Sprint Cup Series race of the season and Truex says his goal for this season is to win at least one. If that one race would happen to be the Daytona 500, he would win the biggest purse of any race throughout the season.
In his last five Daytona 500s, he has had an average starting position of 14.6th including a poll position in 2009, and an average finishing position of 17th, including a sixth-place finish in 2010, for an average of 100 points per finish. According to OddsShark.com, Truex's odds to win the Daytona 500 are currently 35/1.
Even though his odds aren't as great as some others, Truex has pictured what it would be like to win the biggest race of the year.
"I have. Confetti, flashes, tears -- everything. I mean, it would be pretty cool."
