Pinstripe Bowl: Syracuse to face West Virginia

The Syracuse Orange will face the West Virginia Mountaineers in the Pinstripe Bowl, the Charleston Daily Mail's Mike Casazza is reporting. The former long-time Big East Conference rivals will meet Saturday, Dec. 29, at Yankee Stadium.

Syracuse (7-5) officially accepted its bowl invitation earlier in the day, while West Virginia's invite and acceptance is expected to come soon.

The Orange, which will representing the Big East for the final time as a football program, is heading into the Pinstripe Bowl on a three-game winning streak. SU ended its season winning five of its last six games, including a dominating 45-26 victory over the then nationally-ranked Louisville Cardlinals and a thrilling 31-27 win at the Missouri Tigers.

The Mountaineers (7-5) will be playing in their first bowl game as a member of the Big 12 Conference. In its inaugural season in the league West Virginia compiled a 4-5 record, which included a two-game winning to close out the regular season.

Before this season, the two programs annually met as members of the Big East and played for the Ben Schwartzwalder Trophy. Currently, Syracuse is in possession of the trophy as it defeated West Virginia, 49-23, last season at the Carrier Dome.

Its expected the winner of the Pinstripe Bowl will earn the right to claim the trophy.
