R.A. Dickey, Blue Jays reportedly reach 2-year extension

The trade that sent R.A. Dickey to the Toronto Blue Jays could be announced as early as Monday evening, as the reigning NL Cy Young winner has reportedly agreed to a two-year extension with the club that would make the trade official.

Richard Griffin of the Toronto Star reports that the sides have come to an agreement. The team had 72 hours to reach an extension with Dickey after the trade was agreed upon with the New York Mets, a window that would close Tuesday at 2 p.m. They'll beat it by a day, as they've apparently come to terms with Dickey.

The specifics of the deal are unknown. The 38-year-old knuckleballer coming off a dominant year had been looking for $26 million over two years from the Mets, but the team was unwilling to compromise, refusing to extend Dickey for more than $10 million a year. It's believed that his deal with the Blue Jays will be for more money. The pitcher was set to receive $5 million, but after an unbelievable campaign that led to the former journeyman winning 20 games, his value was much higher.

Dickey had become a fan favorite for his improbable backstory, becoming the first knuckleball pitcher ever to win the Cy Young -- and first Met in almost 30 years -- despite never having caught on with a major league club for an extended period of time in his long career. The trade also brings catcher Josh Thole come to the Jays, although they'll give up major prospects catcher Travis d'Arnaud and righthander Noah Syndergaard, as well as John Buck.
