The tragedy occurred just 90 minutes from East Rutherford, home of the Giants and Jets.

First reported by the NFL Network, the New York Giants will honor the memory of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary in their game against the Falcons on Sunday.

Along with an NFL-wide moment of silence, the Giants will adorn their helmets with "S.H.E.S.," the initials of the school where 26 people were murdered on Friday.

The writing will appear on the red vertical stripe of the players' helmets in black permanent marker, according to Matt Ehalt of ESPN New York.

The Giants' official Twitter account tweeted a picture of how the writing will appear. Though the game will take place on the road in Atlanta, the Giants home -- MetLife Stadium -- is a 90-minute drive from Newtown, Conn.

At 9:35 a.m. ET Friday morning, 20-year-old Adam Lanza opened fire on the elementary school, killing 20 children and six adults before taking his own life. It was the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history, after the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting.
