There was No Doubt about it.

Austin Trout scored a huge upset victory over Miguel Cotto on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, winning a unanimous decision victory to retain his 154-pound WBA belt, moving to 26-0 and handing Cotto his first ever loss at MSG. Trout won on score of 119-109, twice, and 117-111, although many writers and observers seemed to think it was a bit closer than that. SB Nation New York had it 116-112 for Trout. With the loss, Cotto fell to 37-4.

Trout was clearly the bigger man, and used his length and agility to throw Cotto off. Cotto consistently tried to do what he does best, backing up his opponent to the ropes and doing work on the inside, but Trout responded well in those instances. Cotto never seemed to hurt Trout at all, despite connecting on some good shots and getting some solid body work in. But Trout landed most of the meaningful shots in the fight, and controlled the pace and distance for the majority of the night, especially after getting off to a great start in the first two rounds.

It was a clear win for Trout, although it was by no means a blowout. Now, Trout has officially made a name for himself in the boxing world with a banner win, and can stake a claim as one of the top 154-pound fighters in the world. Cotto, who was clearly gutted after the loss, will have to decide whether or not he wants to continue with his career. Had he won the fight, Cotto would have set up a date with unbeaten Mexican star Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, a fight many wanted to see. It's possible that if Cotto wants to continue, he can at some point get a fight with Alvarez, but Trout's victory sets him up for that fight in the immediate.

Unfortunately for the many fans of Miguel Cotto, there's a chance that his days as a meaningful fighter came to a crashing end in the building he's made his home. The night marked Trout's arrival on the big stage, and we'll now see if he can stay there.
