The college basketball season tips off Friday night including a marquee game in the Barclays Center, while the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets both take to the court on the professional level.
NBA: Brooklyn Nets vs. Orlando Magic, 7:00 p.m., YES: The Nets have lost a pair of embarrassing games in a row, but have a chance to snap out of their funk against the Magic, who have somehow scrapped together a 2-2 record without a consistent threat in the wake of the Dwight Howard trade. J.J. Redick, Glen Davis, and Arron Afflalo have carried the scoring load for Orlando, so Brooklyn has the advantage.
Dallas Mavericks vs. New York Knicks, 7:30, MSG: The undefeated Knicks look to remain the last team in the league without a loss as they take on the 4-1 Dallas Mavericks. Jason Kidd plays his former team for the first time since his championship second stint in Dallas, as a new look Mavericks team with Dirk Nowitzki sidelined looks to continue its success against what's been the best team in this young NBA season.
College basketball: Maryland vs. No. 3 Kentucky, 8:30 p.m., ESPN: The defending national champions open the season with a marquee matchup in Brooklyn, as the Nets' home arena plays host to the Barclays Center Classic. The game pits a rebuilding Maryland squad against a John Calipari squad that shed four first-round draft picks including the top two, but is considered elite again with a whole new dominant recruiting class.
