The Seton Hall Pirates came out victorious in their home opener Monday night, holding off the Norfolk State Spartans, 78-65.
Fuquan Edwin and Eugene Teague each tallied a double-double in the win for the Pirates. Edwin scored 23 points with 10 rebounds and six steals, while Teague added 16 points and 11 rebounds of his own. Guard Kyle Smyth scored 14 points off the bench.
Norfolk State shocked the college basketball world last year as a No. 15 seed in the NCAA Tournament, upsetting the No. 2 Missouri Tigers, but they could not find any trace of the same magic to spoil Seton Hall's home opener. Guards Pendarvis Williams and Malcolm Hawkins led the way for the Spartans, who fell to 1-1 on the season with the loss. Williams scored 20 points and added three rebounds. Hawkins also scored in double-digits, with 15 points, but could not manage to tally either a rebound or an assist.
Seton Hall now prepares to face the Washington Huskies on Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., as they make their way through the non-conference schedule.
