The 2012 Gold Glove winners will be announced on Tuesday night. The New York Yankees were one of the better defensive clubs around this season, and three Bronx Bombers were named finalists for the award this week.
The winners are voted on by managers and up to six coaches from each team. They are not allowed to vote for their own players.
Veteran catcher Russell Martin is up against Alex Avila, A.J. Pierzynski and Matt Wieters. It's always tough to predict who wins amongst catchers because it's the little things that typically determine just how good they are behind the plate. When looking at the defensive metrics on FanGraphs, either Avila or Wieters should win.
Mark Teixeira is up against Adrian Gonzalez and Eric Hosmer at first base. Statistically speaking, Teixeira was the best defensive 1B in the league. Gonzalez also had a fine season, while Hosmer ranked lowest amongst qualified players at first.
At second base, Robinson Cano is up against Dustin Pedroia and Dustin Ackley. Cano was the best in terms of runs saved, although Pedroia and Ackley both had fine seasons as well. This appears to be one of the closer races around.
The Gold Glove winners will be announced at 9:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Oct. 30.
