As the New York Knicks continue to trim down their roster in preparation for the season opener, the team formally announced their decision to waive Chris Smith on Friday.
The move comes not too long after hearing Smith would need left patella tendon surgery and would be out anywhere from three to six months. The injury had previously been described as a 'sore left knee', but clearly was more serious than that.
Smith, the younger brother of currenth Knick J.R. Smith, signed a two-year, partially guaranteed contract with an invite to Knicks training camp in August. He played for New York's Las Vegas summer league squad and served as an an extra body in training camp.
Due to his injury and NBA rules that permit their clubs to roster up to 15 players on their NBA team, the Knicks had no choice but to clear room by waiving the injured Smith.
