After more than 80 years of waiting the borough of Brooklyn was bequeathed a boxing card headlined by four world championship fights. But thanks to a challenger failing to make weight, the one featuring the hometown kid as champion is expected to be a non-title affair. And the other, while still scheduled, could be in jeopardy with the failure of a drug test.
Brooklyn's Paulie "Magic Man" Malignaggi was to defend the WBA welterweight championship against Pablo Cesar "El Demoledor" Cano, until Cano weighed in at 148.4 pounds, 1.4 over the limit, and could not come down after being given a second chance to cut. Unified super lightweight world champion Danny Garcia's title defense and rematch with Erik Morales is supposed to be headliner, but the New York State Athletic Commission is evaluating whether or not the match will actually take place.
Early on Friday, ESPN.com reported the fight was on despite Morales testing positive for clenbuteral, used for breathing disorders and a weight-loss aid, because while Morales' "A" sample was positive, the results of the "B" sample test won't be available until after the fight. Conversely, the New York Daily News reported that if the second one does arrive early and is positive, Garcia's father, Angel, said his son will not go through with the fight.
In two other title bouts, Manhattan's Peter "Kid Chocolate" Quillin's challenges WBO middleweight king Hassan N'Dam and Randall Bailey's defends the IBF welterweight title against Devon Alexander. The full fight card is below, which is obviously subject to change.
