Rutgers Football Recruiting 2012: Scarlet Knights Trying To Build On 2011

National Signing Day for college football teams to bring new players into their programs is February 1. With that date rapidly approaching, head coach Greg Schiano and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights are busy trying to get commitments from high school and junior college players to head to Piscataway.

Thus far, the Scarlet Knights have received only 16 commitments for the 2012 season. Four of those commitments, however, have come from players given four-star ratings by recruiting experts. Four- and five-star athletes are considered the top-tier players and are the most heavily sought-after.

Nine of Rutgers' 16 commitments thus far have come from players who attended high school in New Jersey. Being able to recruit heavily from the school's backyard is an emphasis for Schiano and Rutgers.

Rutgers' recruiting class is currently ranked 53rd in the nation and fifth overall in the Big East Conference.
