The New York Yankees are in Anaheim Friday night to face the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (10:05 p.m. ET). Bartolo Coloin (8-9) faces LA's Jared Weaver (16-7) as the Yankees begin a nine-game road trip that will also take them to Seattle to face the Mariners and Toronto to play the Blue Jays.
With 20 games left in the regular season the Yankees (87-55) find themselves 2.5 games ahead of the Boston Red Sox in the American League East. That the Yankees would be out front in the division this late in the season has be be considered a surprise, since nearly every prognosticator on the planet -- including every ESPN expert who made a prediction -- chose Boston to win the division this season.
Can the Yankees hang on? It would be nice, but probably really does not matter. Both the Yankees and Red Sox are headed for the playoffs, unless one team or the other suffers an epic collapse over the final three weeks of the season.
Regardless, if you are up late this evening and look for something to watch, remember that the Yankees are on late.
