Getting a jump start on their official announcements about the opening of the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, minority owner Jay-Z said on Fox this morning that the New Jersey Nets will be known as the Brooklyn Nets. While it may seem like a lot of buildup for not much of a change, it should be noted that no one really expected the team to go with a brand new name.
The "new" name is just part of what the team is rolling out for the press. Before the Nets ever take the court, Jay-Z will open up the building with "a couple of concerts" the hip-hop mogul said on Monday. Expect his wife -- and mother to his soon-to-be-born child -- to also appear on the Barclays stage.
The concerts will all be part of the three-week long grand opening that will kick off on Sept. 28, 2012.
There is no doubt that while the Nets are the main tenants at Barclays, they will certainly not be the only attraction.
