True freshman Giovano Bernard scored his second rushing touchdown of the day, and has help the University of North Carolina football team take a 24-15 advantage over Rutgers University heading into the fourth quarter. Bernard capped a late-third quarter drive, which consisted of seven plays and 49 yards over 3:06, with a six-yard rushing TD.
The Scarlet Knights (1-0), who trailed 17-12 at halftime, had cut their deficit to just two points after field-goal kicker San San Te connected from 19 yards with 8:53 remaining in the third. RU used its third interception of the day -- this time by David Rowe, who also has two fumble recoveries -- to help set up San Te.
UNC has scoring plays of 66 and 60 yards, while kick returner T.J. Thorpe's 59-yard return near the end of the first half helped set up a Casey Barth 46-yard field goal that split the upright with :19 to go.
