Yankees Defeat Red Sox In Series Opener, 5-2: The Yankees had to fight for it, literally, but they pulled within a half-game of Boston in the American League East with a victory Tuesday night. Benches cleared in the seventh inning, four batters were hit, manager Joe Girardi was ejected and CC Sabathia used all of his considerable skill to navigate six brutal innings. And the teams go at it again the next two nights at Fenway Park.

NFL Roster Cuts 2011: Giants, Jets Get Five-Player Exceptions For Thursday Night: The NFL has cut the two New York teams a bit of a break in the wake of Hurricane Irene. The teams will be allowed to keep five extra players on their rosters for their Thursday night preseason games, a decision made since the teams are playing twice within 72 hours.
