NFL Roster Cuts 2011: Vernon Gholston Released By Chicago Bears

-- SB Nation New York will track roster cuts around the NFL the next few days, focusing on players who are of interest to fans of both the New York Giants and New York Jets.

Former New York Jets defensive end Vernon Gholston, a first-round bust with the team, has now been released by the Chicago Bears. After blaming head coach Rex Ryan for his failing with the Jets, you wonder who or what Gholston will blame this on.

Gholston was drafted in the first round (sixth overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Jets. He had no sacks and only 34 tackles in his three Jets seasons.

Among the shots he took at Ryan on the way out the Jets door were:

"Whenever you have a new coach, you hope everything's fair," Gholston said. "But obviously, he was in Baltimore for a number of years and has a passion for those guys."

and ...

"Teams are always looking for talent, and to say I don't have talent is a far stretch," Gholston said. "It's all about getting a fair shot and time in the system. With the Jets, it was constant position change and coaching change. There was no stability. I never really had that with the Jets."

He was released by Chicago after registering just one tackle in three preseason games.
