New York horse racing moves from Belmont Park to the beautiful Saratoga Race Course during the summer months, and Saturday the eyes of the racing community will be on the action at historic Saratoga. The Travers Stakes, nicknamed the Midsummer Derby, will be run and it is expected to include a star-studded field of three-year-olds.
Nine horses are considered "probable" for the Travers, with post positions to be drawn Wednesday for the 142nd running of the Midsummer Derby.
Among those nine horses are Preakness Stakes winner Shackleford, Haskell Invitational winner Coil, Belmont Stakes winner Ruler On Ice and Jim Dandy winner Stay Thirsty.
The Pick6 Blog says the Travers is "shaping up as the race of the summer."
SB Nation New York will have odds, post positions, news updates and much more race coverage as the week unfolds. You can also visit our horse racing website, And Down The Stretch They Come, for much more on the Travers and on horse racing in general.
