Terrell Thomas was not the only cornerback the New York Giants lost for the season during Monday night's 41-13 preseason victory over the Chicago Bears. Brian Witherspoon was carted off the field after returning a punt in the second half, and tweeted this afternoon that he had torn an ACL and was finished for the season.
Witherspoon, a three-year veteran, had been impressive thus far in the preseason and with Thomas out likely would have opened the season as the Giants third cornerback. Instead, he will join Thomas on the sidelines. Thomas also suffered a torn ACL, his occurring near the end of the first half.
The Giants also lost reserve cornerback Bruce Johnson for the season when he suffered a ruptured Achilles Tendon during a training camp practice at the Timex Performance Center.
The Giants will reportedly work out free-agent cornerbacks on Wednesday. Former Indianapolis Colts starter Kelvin Hayden is not expected to be among them, as reports are that the Giants are not willing to meet Hayden's asking price.
