Ruler On Ice, a 24-1 long shot who did not run in the Kentucky Derby or Preakness Stakes, stunned the field to win the 143rd running of the Belmont Stakes Saturday at Belmont Park in Elmont.
Preakness winner Shackleford set the pace, as expected, with Ruler On Ice sitting just behind. Ruler On Ice ran down a fading Shackleford heading into the backstretch and held off an inside charge from Stay Thirsty and a run from Brilliant Speed for the victory with Jose Valdivia Jr. aboard.
Animal Kingdom, winner of the Kentucky Derby and runner-up in the Preakness, seemed to stumble coming out of the starting gate and was never a factor in the outcome, finishing sixth. Shackleford faded to fifth after leading most of the race.
