Notre Dame's Mike Brey Won't Take Maryland Job

Notre Dame men's basketball coach Mike Brey will not leave the Fighting Irish to replace the retired Gary Williams at the University of Maryland, and it appears the Terrapins' search for a new head coach is now moving beyond the borders of the Big East Conference.

Brey had been considered the front-runner for the job since he played and coached at DeMatha High School, just down the road from Maryland. He will stay at Notre Dame, however, probably with a fat new contract. Villanova's Jay Wright and Pittsburgh's Jamie Dixon had been considered candidates, but they appear to be off the radar now.

The Chicago Tribune has come out with an updated list of potential Maryland coaches, and predicts that Gonzaga's Mark Few will end up taking the Maryland job.

Maryland would afford Few all the trappings than Gonzaga cannot: ACC stature, regular hobnobbing with Mike Krzyzewski and Roy Williams, an East Coast recruiting base, etc. It would take Few only a year or two to have the Terps back in the national picture as one of the country's elite.
