Morning Coffee! Bad News For Mets

Good morning, New York/New Jersey sports fans! Let's get right to our first look at the regional sports scene?

Geesh, haven't the New York Mets already had enough bad things happen to them as a franchise this season? Now comes word that highly-touted pitching prospect Jenrry Mejia has a torn ligament in his elbow and is headed for Tommy John surgery. That means it will probably be the 2013 season before you see him pitching in the big leagues.

As if they needed one the New York Yankees found another reason to appreciate Mariano Rivera Monday night. The Yankees benefitted from a ninth-inning implosion by Detroit closer Jose Valverde to break a 3-3 with two soft runs. Rivera, pitching for the third straight day, then set the Tigers down on a measly nine pitches as the Yankees won, 5-3.

Let's hope there is no validity to the story about New York Giants' first-round draft choice Prince Amukamara falling in the NFL Draft because of his Nigerian heritage. If there is any truth to that, that would be a sad commentary on the ignorance of NFL decision-makers.
